Hi,
@work, I have to work with (insert as many expletives as you like) Lotus Notes.
Now, I'm wondering how to convert existing .nsf files to something a little bit
more standard, like, say, mbox? This of course including such unimportant things
like attachments.
There's an export function in the Notes client that will generate something
close enough to mbox, but without attachments - thus not usable.
I'd love to be able to get the task done without going through the server,
connecting through IMAP using a decent client etc, and what's more, on a
Linux box...
I've googled a bit, but the result so far has been very disappointing.
Does anyone know any means to get this done?

Actually, that's a very cumbersome solution that I was aware of and wanted
to avoid - but which I ended up using since I found no other solution.
I.e.: open the .nsf file in the Notes client, copy mails over to the server
(that is, copy to a subdirectory of my normal mailbox), transfer them back
to the local machine via Thunderbird's IMAP, and Thunderbird uses mbox for
its folders.
In my case, that was possible as I have IMAP active for my account - that
may not be true for everybody (as it's inactive by default).
A direct conversion possibility to mbox would be infinitly simpler...
Other question regarding Notes: how to export an address book to something
standard? I know Notes features LDAP connectivity, but in our case here
that's inactive and will remain so. What's standard for such data anyway?
Any ideas?

Hello Eric,
As mboxis a fairly trivial format, why not write a small Java agent that
takes the relevant Notes fields and writes them into a local file? Unless
there are somehidden surprises with attachments it should be fairly easy,
even with limited knowledge of Note programming.
BTW, this might be the quickest approach for _any_ export from Notes...as
soon as you have no view complete enough for File -> Export. And
"structured text" export plus some text-file hacking might also do the
job.

You have my warmest understanding for disliking Notes, as well as for not
wanting to learn it more than necessary. Isn't there someone in our
organisation owing you a few lines of code? :)
Actually, I remember vaguely that you can also write Notes-connecting Java
applications...that either connect to the Notes server as a Notes client
does, or simply "connect" to a nsf file. You would only need the Notes
libs (I suppose that's not an issue)... Obviously that doesn't solve the
problem of who is writing the code...:)

knowledge
whatsoever, at least for me ;-) and there's no wish to acquire such
either.

If anyone owes me one, I won't be repaid by such slave labour ;-)
Hmmm... guess I'll have a chat with one of the colleagues from the team
here, he's already done some Notes stuff... if he can whip sth. up with
no real trouble...
Anyway, the issue was more or less a one-off issue for me (that pesky
distinction between "archive now" and "archive selected documents" -
at
least my mailbox is back down to a comparatively small size), so I won't
press it too much.
Of course, many people have to suffer Notes, so there might indeed be
some use for a nice solution...
