Hi,
as for the previous LinuxDays, LiLux will also organize two
courses for the next edition, on January 25th and 26th.
These two courses are
- Linux Basics / Basic Linux Usage (or whatever it'll be called)
Here the goal is to teach "normal users" how to make use of a
GNU/Linux desktop.
The course will be half a day, i.e. 2x 1h30min, according to
the current schedule it would be on January 25th in the morning.
We so far have two volunteers to organize this course, Jule and
Pascal.
- Linux Networking (or whatever the name will be)
Here the goal is to teach everything concerning basic connectivity,
from ifconfig to routing to packet filters, QoS, VLANs and VPNs.
The course will be half a day, i.e. 2x 1h30min, according to
the current schedule it would be on January 25th in the afternoon.
We as yet lack volunteers for organizing this course, except for
Alain Rassel who's agreed to do the VPN part.
Now is the time to write up the abstracts, including the detail
of what exactly will be the contents of the courses - I have to
provide them to the LinuxDays team this friday morning. There
should be two versions of the abstract, one short (~1 paragraph)
and one longer (~1/2 - 1 page) with the details of the contents
and pre-requirements, so people can have an idea of what they'll
get.
Also, it will in time be necessary to know on which Linux
distribution the individual courses will take place, so the
LinuxDays team can prepare the hardware accordingly.
So, we absolutely need to find out who will help out with the
networking course, both groups will need to sit together and
write up the title, abstracts for the courses, and provide these
to me in time so I can provide them on friday morning.
I'm willing to help out for the preparation of the networking
course (especially the VLAN part, as I've got a little experience
there), but won't be able to participate in it's presentation,
as I'm already taken by another course.
If you're feeling confident about some subject matter, but are
not willing to stand in front of a room full of people, you're
still welcome in helping prepare the course.
We do have some presentations and courses from other occasions
which can be used as a basis for these courses, which may need
updating though.
Someone or Some-Several will also be welcome to man the LiLux
stand during the LinuxDays.
So, please, volunteers, step up and tell us how you can help us

P.S. Alain Knaff also agreed to do the Samba part of the 2-day
Server tutorial, which is done mostly by "externals" and a few
people from the CRP Henri Tudor.
Hi,
in case you're encountering DHCP problems with Knoppix, this may be
due to poor interaction between Knoppix's "pump" and a combination
of Cisco DHCP Proxy / MS-Windows-based DHCP server (can't trace it
more precisely than that right now).
All is well if you use dhclient or dhcpcd (both of which not included
with Knoppix) instead of pump - transfer the Debian testing dhcp-client
debian package to the Knoppix machine and install it using dpkg, that'll
do the trick.
The problem was noticed & solved while setting up a Knoppix demo PC.

Hi all,
I've come across a nasty problem: I am 99.999% sure that the volume
transferred on my LuxDSL account, as reported by
http://volume.luxdsl.lu/index.jsp , doubles the amount for bittorrent
transfers (and e.g. not for ftp, according to my tests). And yes, I did take
care of upstream volumes, by using the --max_upload_rate option AND I checked
the statistics from my IPCop firewall (which obviously does take TCP overhead
into account). The conclusion is that bittorrent tranfers only are affected.
Any clues or similar experience? Thanks in advance.

I am currently evaluating VMWare workstation 4.5.2 running on Slackware
10 as a host, and Windows XP as a guest. I am impressed how smooth
everything ran up to now, and seriously consider buying this piece of
software.
Has anybody got some experience with this? Maybe on a 2.6 kernel, other
Linux host distros, other guest OSes?
Also, the price tag is quite high - 189$. Do you know of any reseller
who offers the same at a lower price?

LiLux is organizing two courses for the occasion, one a course for
beginners who'll learn there how to use a Linux desktop, the other
one about networking, from setting an IP address to configuring
VPNs and QoS. Each of these tutorials will last half a day (two
parts of 1 1/2 h each, the basic tutorial in the morning of january
25th, the network tutorial in the afternoon of january 25th).
Alain Knaff also got asked about a Samba part for the Server
Tutorial from the CRP, which sort of implies that he'd be doing
double duty with the packet filter part of the networking course.
Would anyone volunteer for the Samba part of the server tutorial
(1 1/2 hours, incl. practical exercises, probably difficult
questions from the audience, incl. questions about how to arm-wrest
MS Windows into cooperating, plus LDAP integration)?
Or else, would anyone volunteer for the packet filter part of
the LiLux network tutorial? The exact duration etc. remains to
be seen, chances are we'll discuss this at the next meeting this
thursday evening.

I am looking for a tool to synchronize an iPAQ PDA with a Linux
Computer. (Contacts, Calendar, data) Even simple file exchange would be
appreciated.
So far, I could only find instructions how to install Linux on a PDA,
which is not what I am looking for!
Does anybody have an idea about this subject?

Hi all,
some of you may remember the thread some time ago regarding the quality
of text display. The bottom line for me was that, for a Linux desktop to
be appealing and easily readable, the following conditions all had to be
met:
1- no anti-aliasing
2- good fonts
3- freetype with the bytecode interpreter enabled.
My current desktop verifies these 3 and I am happy with it. However, I
had to tweak it because, out of the box,
1- anti-aliasing was not generally disabled
2- font were, well, not great, and
3- freetype was delivered with the bytecode interpreter disabled because
it is an US distro and Apple has a patent on that in the US.
As I have not tested all distros, can anybody tell me which distro meets
these 3 criteria? I am especially interested in the mainstream one's
like SuSE, Mandrake, Debian and Fedora.

I ran myself into some stupid trouble with my notebook here.
Thing is, I wanted to play around with the X.org X11 server a bit - this
didn't work out too well (froze my system as soon as I tried to activate
the driver for my synaptics touchpad), so I reverted to xfree86.
Now it seems that the keymaps don't get loaded properly by the X11
server. Symptom is, I can't access any combinations with Alt-Gr,
including such things as the pipe character or the @ (copy/pasted now),
which is extremely irritating.
I found the following in /var/log/XFree86.0.log:
(II) Keyboard "Keyboard1" handled by legacy driver
Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap
(II) Server_Terminate keybinding not found
When I try setting things manually using setxkbmap, I get the following:

Hello,
Coditel seems to have upgraded my connection to 2Mbit/s. Last time when
they upgraded from 512Kbit/s to 1Mbit/s, they did inform me with a
written letter.
